about
Mia Fyu is an Austrian playwright and filmmaker whose work explores speculative fiction and feminist narratives across theater, film, and spatial practices. Her art reimagines the social body by drawing on intimate personal experiences to challenge normative processes, such as female guilt, desire, pleasure, identification, and objectification. Fyu applies her practice to a diverse range of mediums, including cinematic essays, plays, animations, and spatial interventions (performance art, immersive installations). Her work also extends to analog storytelling through illustration, poetry, and both fiction and non-fiction writing.

Space, Power & Gender. Examining the Spatial Availability of Women and Gender Constructions in Architecture
Guided by an emancipatory quest for knowledge, I aim to explore the difference in spatial availability for women and men, both within cultural history and in the gendered construction of social spaces. In doing so, I will examine the historical gender and spatial allocation in private and public spaces, the main practices of caregiving as the supposedly natural inclination of women through the maintenance of spaces (domestic space), and the analytical aspects of spatial practices. Furthermore, I will address the contemporary position of female architects. This research unfolds across three interconnected chapters, each contributing to an intricate understanding of how 'space' is appropriated and cultivated by binary gender norms: I will illustrate how women and men appropriate 'space' through the narrative of history (Chapter 1), care for the 'space' they subsequently inhabit (Chapter 2), and under what circumstances female architects create 'space' (Chapter 3) in the 21st century, all while dispelling traditional prejudices and outdated stereotypes. Throughout this exploration, the objective is to underscore the binary relationships between gender and space, identity and construction, theory and practice, and desire and reality, complementing these analyses with a feminist ethic that challenges established norms and advocates for equality in spatial dynamics within the field of architecture.
The Suspension of Female Guilt. An analysis of the Catholic confessional and patriarchal ethics.
The concept of 'guilt' has intrigued scholars and philosophers throughout history. Is it merely a feeling or a norm tied to actions? Does it manifest uniformly across genders? The intriguing design of traditional confessionals, seemingly crafted to intensify the sensation of guilt, adds a layer of complexity to this inquiry. Moreover, the promise of 'guilt resolution' through a ritualistic process, often mediated exclusively by men, raises critical questions. In my Master's thesis, I embark on a historical reconstruction of the contemporary and gender-specific meanings of 'guilt.' The analysis delves into its development with a focus on gender differences. Beginning with an exploration of 'guilt' rooted in its etymology and semantic evolution, ranging from antiquity to its diverse interpretations in jurisprudence, theology, and philosophy, the study aims to establish a comprehensive foundation.
The thesis presents a novel perspective termed 'female guilt,' asserting that 'guilt' functions as a tool that legitimizes patriarchal authority, thereby perpetuating the subjugation of women. The phenomenon of 'female guilt' is intricately linked to religiously influenced concepts of purity and female sexuality. By examining prevalent myths such as the original guilt of woman and the idealization of female innocence, the thesis aims to elucidate their influence on contemporary societal moral constructs defining the role of women. The investigation traces the roots of patriarchal ethics to Christian mythological foundations, scrutinizing the attribution of 'guilt' to women in the Old Testament and the concurrent bestowal of power upon men. Legitimizing narratives and patterns are revealed, spanning from the Adam and Eve creation story to the modern culture of shame. This cultural manifestation extends to artifacts of church architecture, notably the Christian confessional.
Where is 'guilt' located on/in the body?
An intriguing aspect of the research involves exploring the embodiment of guilt. A three-month series of interviews with experts from diverse disciplines, including architecture, philosophy, cultural studies, theology, and jurisprudence, was conducted. Discussions centered on guilt, shame, the concept of the confessional, and confession as a purification ritual. A consistent concluding question sought to unravel the physical location of 'guilt' in or on the body. Contrary to initial expectations, the responses to the question varied significantly. While anticipating a consensus, particularly locating guilt "in the shoulders," the diverse range of answers adds an unexpected dimension to the exploration of the intricate relationship between guilt and the human body.
Gazing AnOther. The construction of a postfeminist perspective in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's 'Fleabag'
This term paper examines the formal conventions of the 'female gaze' to question the symbolic dimension of the "gaze" and its staging in visual media and gender perspectives: What is seen by whom and how? How does the 'female gaze' differ from the 'male gaze,' and what formal elements define its visual language? How do camera movements, framing, perspectives, etc., determine the visual perception of the audience? Why and for whom is a gaze gender-constructed? Whose ideologies are embodied in such gaze constructions, and how does this change our experience as spectators?
I Love Dick: Imagination and Subversion. The Desiring 'I' in the Letters of Chris Kraus
This Master's thesis examines theoretical models that view female imagination and writing as methods to strengthen the subjectivity of women and subvert patriarchal power structures. At the center of the investigation is the Anglo-American series I Love Dick (2016–2017) by Joey Soloway, based on the autofictional debut novel by Chris Kraus, which has become a feminist cult classic since its publication in 1997. Both works portray the obsessive relationship of the protagonist Chris Kraus with a man named Dick. While the epistolary novel blends memoir, essay, and fiction, the series follows an intellectual web of subversive femininity and patriarchal power within the art world.
I Love Dick is more than just a one-sided love story – it is a reflection on desire and art from a female perspective, reigniting the creative and libidinal potential of a woman. In my analysis, I focus particularly on the function of the letter, which plays a central role in both works for self-reflection and expression. The thesis operates transdisciplinarily at the intersection of film theory, art, and political practice, drawing on (Queer-)Feminism and Poststructuralism. It questions whether the act of writing desire and creating fantasies can unleash emancipatory and creative potentials that extend beyond the text.
